FASHION: Why are cardigans taking a come back?

The snuggly button-up knit — beloved of post-punk revivalists everywhere — is now an essential component of the paparazzi-primed outfits worn by the Los Angeles’ teen and twentysomething power set, which includes models Kaia Gerber, Bella and Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner.
The way to wear the cardigan now isn’t necessarily chill-proof, but that’s not the point. Start by cutting back on the layers — this season’s cardis are worn with nothing underneath and a pair of faded vintage Levi’s jeans (yes, the ones you’ve had in your wardrobe for the past decade).

Pre-quarantine, the walk from the hotel to the car had become the new red carpet for some of the world’s most photographed young women. This is where the cardi — worn conspicuously unbuttoned to flash toned abs — comes into its own. The 1990s knit is the apotheosis of ‘candid’ Insta-style, in that it is handpicked from the Pinterest fashion vault precisely because it looks like it hasn’t been styled, but rather thrown on. Sounds simple, right?
